Florence, Italy, is the capital of Tuscany, one of the most beautiful regions in Italy, and is famous for its history. A centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, Florence is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages. The image shows Ponte Vecchio at sunset on a spring day. The bridge crosses the Arno River, and as common, the segmental arch bridge still has shops built along it. Butchers initially occupied these shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.
